Alfonso Guerra joins the historic manifesto of the PSOE in defense of Spanish as a lingua franca

Former vice-president of the government Alfonso Guerra joined the initiative promoted by socialist leaders Antonio Miguel Carmona and Zenón Jiménez Ridruejo on the ‘’ platform for the defense of the vehicular nature of Castilian and against the transactional amendment agreed between the PSOE, United We Can and ERC to the Celáa law.

The campaign adds more than 130,000 signatures, when the government approved in the Congress Committee on Education and Vocational Training the report’s opinion on the “ Celaá Law ”, with the votes in favor of the PSOE, United We Can, ERC, PNV and More countries.

The support obtained this Friday in committee, would not be enough for the executive in plenary of Congress next week, where the opinion will be debated again and must be ratified by an absolute majority (176 deputies), since a reform of ‘an organic law, and continue its treatment in the Senate.

Among the signatories of this initiative are socialists like the former vice-president of the government Alfonso Guerra, the former presidents of the Senate Juan José Laborda and Javier Rojo; the former secretary general of social security Adolfo Jiménez; the former secretary general of the UGT Cándido Méndez; Dean Lidia Falcón; former ministers such as César Antonio Molina, José Barrionuevo or Julián García Vargas and the president of the Movement against Intolerance, Esteban Ibarra, or the former handball coach Juan de Dios Román, among others.

In a statement, Carmona explained that “he approves the educational project Isabel Celáa, approved by the Council of Ministers, signed by the President of the Government (PSOE) and presented for processing to the Congress of Deputies, where he says that” the Castilian is the lingua franca in Spain. ”Nothing in accordance with the ERC amendment which removes this part”.

For Carmona, ERC MEP Montse Bassa “is the one who is clearest when she says that Spanish can be taught in Catalonia, not as a vehicle, but like English or French”. In this sense, he censured that “the separatists confuse immersion and submersion when it is not submission. And that does not go with our character ”.

“We defend all the Spanish languages. Basque, Catalan, Galician and Spanish. Any attack against one of them will have our disapproval,” Carmona warned, while specifying that the position of the PSOE “has it has always been itself “and it goes through” the defense of all languages, the common and vehicular character of Castilian and co-officiality in the territories “.

The petition was accompanied by a manifesto in which they claim that “Spanish is the language of each and every Spaniard, the basis of our culture, diverse and plural, the main guarantee of unity whose vehicular capacity enriches us “.

Do not forget either that article 3 of the Spanish Constitution establishes that Castilian is the official Spanish language of the State and that all Spaniards have the duty to know it and the right to use it, as well as other Spanish languages will also be official in the country. Respective Autonomous Communities in accordance with their statutes.

The text regrets that “unfortunately de facto” Spanish is no longer a lingua franca in education in certain autonomous communities and that “the amendment consecrates a historical error”. Thus, they stated that “it is possible in this context to speculate” on the government’s reasons which led to the modification of the original text. “Without a doubt, the requirements for the approval of the draft budget, presented in recent days, must have been relevant in making this decision,” he suggested.

“We are not opposed to the study of Spanish as a language, like English or French, but in no way vehicular”, they specified. Of course, they affirmed that “the obvious vehicular nature of the Castilian language is respected in the context of educational activity throughout the Spanish territory”.
