Astronomers have discovered a black hole closest to Earth. This small black hole is only 1,500 light years from Earth and is called Unicorn. This black hole is located in the Monoceros planetarium and its mass is only three times that of our sun. The leader of the research team, Thirindu Jaisinghe, says that she is quite unique and therefore was named a unicorn.
Jayasinghe, a doctoral student in astronomy at Ohio State University, said this black hole has a companion who is a red giant star. The life of this star is coming to an end. This star was observed using different instruments. After analyzing this dataset, the team found that the star’s difference in light could be seen.
It has been estimated that an object changes shape. The team came to the conclusion that the object was a black hole, based on the star’s difference in speed and illumination.
How did you know
Study co-researcher Todd Thompson explained that how the moon’s gravity causes high tide on Earth impacts the black hole star. However, it is a conjecture and a black hole, to be confirmed. Very few black holes of such low mass have been discovered because they are very difficult to find. The light in the black hole is unable to return. They are detected based on their effect on surrounding objects.
