Google Spain promotes the digitization of the hotel industry to help one of the sectors most affected by COVID-19

Bars and restaurants are gatherings and celebrations, but they’re also business lunches, gastronomic adventures, and solace in defeating your favorite team. Spaces where tradition and modernity, the traditional and the eclectic, intersect with the daily menu, Sunday tapas or a drink after work.

In recent months, this sector, which is a key axis of tourism, has been seriously affected. According to the report “ Impact of Covid-19 on the hospitality industry in Spain ” prepared by Bain & Company and EY, the effects of the coronavirus could lead to a drop in the sector’s annual turnover of up to 55 billion euros in 2020, which equates to 40%.

Digitization has become one of the keys to their recovery and to creating new opportunities in the face of possible health restrictions, with users turning to the digital environment for information on these establishments. Services such as “take-out” or “ready-to-eat delivery”, according to data from Google Trends, grew by 26% and 35% respectively in 2020 over the previous year. In addition, the Spaniards searched 300% more “nearby” in the first week of August than at the beginning of April, which shows an interest in establishments and services close to users.

With the aim of promoting the digital transformation of the sector, today we are announcing a new campaign, which includes digital resources and face-to-face support so that hotel establishments continue to boost their activity despite the difficulties linked to the pandemic. To do this, we have partnered with Mahou San Miguel and Schweppes to provide Spanish bars and restaurants with access to courses and training through Google Actvate and other resources such as the company profile on Google, thus helping to create a more sustainable business model through digitization.

This work will also allow face-to-face visits to more than 10,000 bars and restaurants to offer them support and assistance in updating their business information on Google.

Improve the online presence of bars and restaurants

In addition, we recently integrated the free course “Digitize Your Business Step by Step with Google My Business and YouTube”. This one-and-a-half-hour training session shows concrete examples of how a hotel establishment can improve its visibility on the Internet and reach more customers.

Over the past few months, we’ve also introduced various updates to Company Profiles on Google, the tool that allows businesses and organizations to manage their online presence, to help businesses deliver critical information and report significant changes in their services to current and potential clients.

In addition to being able to include the usual information such as opening and closing times, menu and digital letter, contact details and website, or chat options, establishments can display directly on Maps and in the engine. Research whether customers can make a table reservation online, or what services they offer, such as take out, home delivery, local or contactless collection. Since February, the number of companies with information on take-out services in their company profile has increased by 54%, while establishments with information on their home services in Spain have increased by 128%.

Digital tools offer a new platform to give visibility to services, connect with new customers and deliver up-to-date information in today’s complex and changing times.
