A few days ago, Microsoft released the latest feature update for Windows 10: the October 2020 Update. Also known as Version 20H2, it introduces several new features such as the new Start menu, the new Microsoft Edge and other new features. You can read all the news in this article.
However, before updating, we should keep in mind that Windows 10 20H2 is coming with known errors that Microsoft will fix over the next few weeks. If these crashes affect our computers, the update will not appear in Windows Update and we will have to wait for them to be corrected.
Upgrade to Windows 10 20H2 from Windows 7 or 8.1
Upgrading from Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 is always free, and for that we will use the media creation tool. This wizard will guide us through the upgrade process and will even allow us to create an install image in case we want to perform a clean install.
The first step, once the application is launched, will be to accept the terms of the license. Then we indicate that we want to update the equipment. At this point, the Windows 10 May 2020 Update download will begin. Finally, we’ll have to choose how to update: keep files and apps, just files, or delete everything.
How to upgrade to the October 2020 update from previous versions of Windows 10
To update to the latest version of Windows 10, we have two alternatives. The first and easiest is to use Windows Update. In case the update does not appear, we could choose to use the Windows 10 Update Assistant, which will guide us through the process.
Update with Windows Update
As we said at the beginning of the article, the easiest method is to use Windows Update. The main reason is that it will check that our equipment is compatible with the October 2020 update and will only offer the update to us if it is, thus avoiding future problems with Windows 10 20H2.
If we update from Windows 10 May 2020 Update, this process will be quick, like a monthly update. There should be no obstacle for us not to do this and in record time we will have upgraded.
To check it, we open the Settings app. Next, we go to Update & Security> Windows Update, and click the “Check for updates” button. In case your device is not compatible, it will tell you that “your device is not ready” to receive Windows 10 version 20H2.
Otherwise, Windows Update will indicate that the feature update is available and a button will appear to download and install the October 2020 update. Once the process has started, we will just have to wait for the team downloads and prepares the update. We restart the computer and when we return to the desktop we will find Windows 10 20H2.
Update with Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant
The Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant is an alternative to upgrading to the October 2020 Update in case it isn’t listed in Windows Update. You have to remember that the deployment is gradual, so it is possible that Windows Update will tell us that our equipment is up to date, when in reality it is not.
Once the wizard has downloaded, updating is as easy as pressing the “Update Now” button that appears on the first screen. If the equipment does not meet the update requirements, a warning will also appear. In this case, the wizard will automatically perform the entire update process.
