Microphone not working in Teams: here’s how to fix it

Microsoft Teams has become the ultimate tool for group communication during a pandemic. Microsoft is aware of the gem it has and has spent months making extraordinary efforts to improve the experience for Teams users. Those of Redmond keep adding functions to the application and are even preparing to launch a necessary overhaul.

However, all of this hard work from the guys at Microsoft doesn’t stop us from occasionally encountering bugs and unexpected issues. One of the most annoying cons is when the microphone isn’t working in Teams. In this article, we are going to show you how to fix it in Windows 10.

Option 1: Make sure the microphone is set up in Teams

The first thing we’ll check is if the issue is in the microphone settings in Teams. To do this, we will follow the next steps that we leave you below:

Open teams Click on your profile picture at the top right and select “Settings”.

Click on “Devices” in the left navigation pane. Under the heading “Audio devices” we will find the Microphone drop-down menu, where we can choose the microphone we want to use with Teams. Select the “Make a test call” option to verify that everything is working.

Option 2: disconnect other devices

Sometimes when another app is using the microphone, the microphone does not work properly in Teams. If this is the case, we need to close all the apps that use our microphone (Skype, Discord, Teamspeek, Zoom …). Restarting the PC may also work in these cases.

If the PC doesn’t seem to recognize the microphone, we can try disconnecting and reconnecting the device to make sure the problem is not just based on the device’s physical contact with the PC. If the connection is USB type, we can try to change the USB cable (if possible) or, failing that, try another USB input on our PC.

Option 3: check Windows 10 settings

If the above options did not work for you, we recommend that you write the word “microphone” in the Windows 10 search bar and enter the option “Microphone privacy settings”. Once inside, we click on the “Edit” option, under the text “Microphone access for this device is on”, to make sure the microphone switch is on.

Next, we need to verify that we have turned on the switch that you see in the attached image, just below the “Allow apps to access microphone” subtitle.

Continue on this page and check if the option “Allow desktop applications to access the microphone” is enabled. Once these options are enabled, the microphone should work fine in Teams.

Option 4: run the troubleshooter

If none of the previous three options worked, all that’s left is to run the Windows 10 troubleshooter to try and get the microphone to work in Teams again. To do this, you need to follow the following steps:

Open the Settings app. Click on “Update and Security”. Choose the “Troubleshoot” option from the left menu. Click on “Additional Convenience Stores”. Look for the “Audio recording” option and run the problem solver. You will need to choose the device you want to repair.

What if the microphone still doesn’t work in Teams?

If none of this worked, there are several options:

The device is faulty (if it does not work with other applications) You have a problem with the driver.

In the latter case, we recommend that you follow the steps we teach you in this article. If you have any questions, please leave a comment and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.
