Chairman Mao stunt lands Chinese Blockchain Conference in soup!
A Blockchain conference held in Boao, Hainan Island in China is mired in controversy after their recent stunt backfired. The conference had an actor portray Chinese communist revolutionary and founding father of the People’s Republic of China, Chairman Mao. The pretend Chairman Mao put in an appearance to congratulate and wish the event success.
This has put the organizers of the conference potentially in trouble with the law. The public have raised a huge outcry against the organizers and they face a tsunami of criticism.
The actor hired by the Blockchain conference to play the former chairman came on stage and said,
“I sincerely wish this conference a great success…and I want to thank you in the name of Mao Zedong.”
Chinese laws state using images, calligraphy or any other form representing former national leaders for commercial promotional activities is illegal. Especially to promote commercial products and their packaging. These regulations were released by China’s State Administration for Industry and Commerce.
Sources report that the organizer of the event has apologized in a WeChat post stating,
“We are sorry for the negative impact our conference had on the public, and we will continue to execute the conference with high standards.”
But the damage has already been and done and participants from the industry have reciprocated with very harsh comments.
An anonymous blockchain project manager said,
“Please, stop being so manipulative. Will there be a Wuzhen World Blockchain Conference in a few days?”
This comment refers to the Wuzhen World Internet Conference held in Wuzhen, a historic town in Zhejiang province. The annually conference sees a lot of China’s top tech leaders gather.
Another anonymous Blockchain investor said,
“You invited Chairman Mao, are you not paying respects to our current leader president Xi?”
Another Blockchain media manager who wished to remain anonymous said,
“All blockchain conferences please fully disclose all speakers and actors invited to attend in order for us to support you.”
This conference held in Boao from May 28 to 29 had tickets ranging from RMB 398 to RMB 2, 980. The identity of the organizers of this conference is still unknown. Lightspeed Venture Partners, dAppLabs, and Token Club participated in this conference.
Several Blockchain events are being conducted at famous venues. This is done to falsely lead the public that they are connected to premier events held at the same place. Similarly, the Boao Asia Blockchain Conference was held in Boao where the Boao Forum for Asia is held annually.
The Chinese have started adopting and implementing Blockchain Technology in a variety of use cases. The Chinese government has recently ordered faster development of Blockchain. While they won’t spell a death knell for Blockchain, they could definitely portray it in a bad light.
