Contest to create gaming app on NEO blockchain draws 160 teams
As on Monday, 160 teams are competing to develop gaming applications based on the NEO network. Winners of the NEO Game competition are expected to be announced on August 15, according to an announcement made on online publishing platform Medium.
The development team, NewEconoLab, had opened registrations for the contest in May. The aim of the competition is to encourage game developers to be familiar with the NEO blockchain, which offers features such as quick transactions and virtual currency support, and enable a blockchain gaming community.
According to the rules of the contest, the game must be based on blockchain technology. Smart contracts can be used to trade and store game assets such as characters and virtual properties. These smart contracts can also be used to store and manage player information such as results, levels and ratings.
Winners of contest to get GAS tokens
In order to to bring in as many registrations as possible, the organizers of the competition have allocated over $500,000 in GAS tokens. The competition will have 39 awards, having a total value of 3.5 million yuan.
NeoGas, or GAS, is another native token of the NEO network and is used to fuel transactions on the blockchain. Whenever a NEO block is generated, GAS is distributed to all NEO holders. The supply of both coins is capped at 100 million tokens each. At the time of writing, the total supply of GAS was 17.2 million coins.
GAS currently has a market capitalization of $109.1 million while that of NEO is $2.19 billion.
Not the first NEO game contest
The development team had conducted a similar competition in November last year and had attracted around 77 entries. The winning entry was Nachomen, a turn-based multiplayer game running on the NEO blockchain. The game was developed by Phantasma, a decentralized content storage and distribution service.
The closed beta version of Nachomen ran from Sunday, and will go on till July 29. Developers release a closed beta version to a restricted number of individuals to test the application by invitation. The open beta version, which will be open to all users for a final test of the game, will go live next month.
