Ethereum-based e-sports project funded by Coinbase launches Gods Unchained
Gods Unchained, the first competitive e-sports project which is built on the Ethereum Blockchain has finally been launched. The new game, which was developed by Fuel Games, was funded by Coinbase Ventures. The funds were to be utilized for the development and deployment of the game. The game provides a better user experience for the gamers by implementing hybrid on-chain and off-chain system. This helps in processing the information better, thus enhancing the user experience as well as preventing network congestion.
The Ethereum Blockchain is home to several Blockchain-based games including the infamous CryptoKitties, Etheremon and the gambling game, Fomo3D. The developers of Etheremon recently announced that they’ll be moving part of the Pokemon-based game’s gameplay to the Zilliqa Blockchain. The Blockchain-based game’s developers aim to increase scalability so that users can play the game quickly as well as cheaply.
Co-founder and COO of the game, Robbie Ferguson said that this is a validation of his “core belief.” According to Ferguson, blockchain technology “makes lots of sense” in the gaming industry. He further added,
“With over $50 billion turned over in in-game assets on marketplaces every year, current game publishers are essentially acting as central banks with absolutely no oversight or regulation – this needs to change.”
During an interview with CNN, he explained that this Coinbase-funded game will not add to the Ethereum Blockchain’s congestion. And even though the game currently has over a million users playing concurrently, it won’t weigh down the ETH network. He explains that players will only initiate transactions on the network to purchase new cards or transfer existing ones. And since all other in-game events will run off-chain, the ETH network will not be weighed down.
“Although all the cards are immutably stored on Ethereum, players in Gods Unchained will only ever initiate transactions on the network when they want to purchase new cards or transfer their existing ones. All other events in the game will run off-chain.”
Ferguson further added that his team has built a unique system to cope with the current landscape of the ETH network. This, according to him, will address the ETH network’s lack of capacity, a common issue faced by several developers. He explains that the system doesn’t rely on the completion of Sharding and Plasma. Sharding and Plasma are a two-layer scaling solution, which is expected to increase the Ethereum network’s capacity.
