“Non-genuine devices spotted”: Trezor issues warning

Trezor, the cryptocurrency hardware wallet, has warned its customers via its official blog post on Monday about the discovery of a “non-genuine device” by a different manufacturer impersonating the Trezor wallet.
“Be careful, buy only from Trezor Shop or authorized resellers,” the company warned its users. The culprit was building “one-to-one copies” of the wallet provider’s flagship Trezor One device.
Comparing this impersonation to counterfeit brand clothing, the company claimed that the fake Trezor was sold at a “steep discount”. The wallet provider further warned customers against using these devices as their services were not authenticated by Trezor and may contain malicious content.
The blog post mentioned a method to confirm the authenticity of the device. If a holographic seal on the box appears to be more reflective and bold (imitating the old Trezor packs), the device is fake. Moreover, behind the box, the sticker with the barcode will not have the essential information to confirm its authenticity.
Trezor, which sells its wallets through both official and non-official channels, has advised customers to exercise caution when purchasing its devices and to ensure authenticity when doing so. “Be very cautious when buying on other marketplaces, such as eBay, Taobao, AliExpress, unknown Amazon resellers or other places. If you are not sure about the authenticity of the seller or the channel, always proceed with the official channels,” the company warned.
Scam-related impersonation of companies and prominent personalities have been on the rise in recent months. Several high-profile Twitter accounts, like that of Tesla co-founder Elon Musk, U.S. retailer Target and Google’s cloud software G Suite, were all hacked last week to promote a Bitcoin giveaway scam.
ICOs have also been a tool to scam several first-time investors, where issuers would raise a certain amount through the tokenization process and abscond without issuing the tokens promised.
