Volkswagen AG’s former research Director, Dr. Klaus Schaaf joins IOTA
The IOTA foundation announced that the former Research Director of Volkswagen, Dr. Klaus Schaaf will join the company. Klaus who has worked with the automobile manufacturing giant for around 30 years will join IOTA in an official capacity. At Volkswagen AG, he was involved mostly in research areas and promoting edge technologies. The IOTA Foundation recently welcomed another new addition to the family. Crypto enthusiast and entrepreneur, Mark Schmidt joined as the community manager.
Dr. Schaaf was a part of Volkswagen Group Digitalisation which focusses on new products and services. The Volkswagen Group Digitalisation was founded by Johann Jungwirth, the supervisory Board member of IOTA. He was mainly involved in Software-over-the-Air (OTA) and application of Distributed Ledger Technology in the automotive world. According to IOTA’s blog post he came across the Blockchain company at that time.
The post also mentions that Dr. Schaaf initiated the proof of concept which Volkswagen exhibited at CeBIT2018. In the early 2000’s, Dr. Schaaf worked with the Volkswagen Electronics Research Lab (ERL) as their Research Director. There, he was responsible for scouting new technologies which would in due course be introduced into cars. ERL in collaboration with Stanford University built an autonomous car called Stanley. The car won the Darpa Great Challenge in 2005.
Klaus has also worked with “Wireless Wolfsburg,” Germany’s first public City-Wifi, as the director. The company tested new applications for automobiles. The company became a part of one of the German e-mobility test fields and BIG IoT. BIG IoT is a European project which enables IoT ecosystems. Dr. Klaus Schaaf is an alumni of Göttingen University where he earned his Ph.D. in Physics.
Dr. Schaaf said,
“The automotive world is disrupted by new technologies like Software-over-the-Air, Function on Demand and Autonomous Driving. New Business Models will provide Mobility-as-a-Service. To support these disruptive technologies Distributed Ledger Technology will play a major role. IOTA and the Tangle provide a future oriented technology which is well suited for the requirements of the new Mobility ecosystem.
I am excited to be part of the IOTA Foundation and to help building the pillars on which this ecosystem will rest.”
IOTA’s Founder, David Sønstebø extended a warm welcome to Dr. Schaaf and said,
“We are very happy to have Klaus join the Foundation in an official capacity. His extraordinary experience stretching back decades, particularly in the field of modern cars and its intersection with Internet of Things make him an ideal advisor to assist us in realizing the vision of the IOTA project. Give him a warm welcome!”
