“The situation is very worrying. It is a reality that we are in a second wave and that the epidemic in many parts of our country is out of control.” This is the warning that the Minister of Health issued on the epidemiological situation, urging to take stronger measures to stop the spread of the coronavirus.
And, despite the fact that many Autonomous Communities have already enforced restrictions, the incidence of cases per 100,000 population continues to skyrocket. In fact, the Spanish average is already well above the target set by the government to maintain the new normal. For this reason, Salvador Illa recalls that “it is important that the measures are effective and well applied”.
Speaking to “Onda Cero”, he wanted to send a “message that we must be on the alert” because “we are on the verge of a complicated period” and “very hard weeks” come with the onset of the cold. . “We are on the threshold of winter, more activities are done indoors and there are more respiratory viruses,” he added during his interview.
Illa urges “more restrictive measures” if incidence does not decrease
He also recalled that despite the availability of vaccines in a few months, the process will take time until “a large group of the population is vaccinated”, which “will not happen in November or December”. “I think we can have the vaccine within five months, but we need time to deliver it,” he said.
For now, he said the government had signed three contracts to receive different vaccines, although he made it clear that “any that does not pass the efficacy checks” will be provided. “We do not know for sure the date to be able to provide them”, even if at the end of 2020 “we could have a vaccine available”.
Will there be a curfew in Spain?
Restricting mobility at night is one of the possibilities that Madrid has put on the table to avoid home meetings, parties and bottles, especially among young people, who represent a high percentage of infections. In fact, 28% of them occur in people aged 15 to 29.
In this regard, Salvador Illa recalled that it was “a measure which is already applied in other countries of the European Union” and which has already been “mentioned in certain interterritorials”. For the moment, it is a restriction that they do not exclude and which will be discussed this afternoon at the Interterritorial Council of the National Health System with all the autonomous communities.
Asked if there will be a response from the ministry, the head of health said “he is to listen” to the autonomies, see their position and ensure coordination. “I do not want to anticipate anything, we will see the proposals.”
What he clarified is that, for the moment, he will not prolong the state of alarm. “The containment of the perimeter of Madrid was an extreme measure with an incidence of 700 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. There are other measures that the regional government is studying and there are municipalities that have already resolved the three parameters,” said he declared.
