The lava flow overflows into the main cone of the La Palma volcano

, There is no truce on La Palma. 25 days after your eruption, the Cumbre Vieja volcano maintains its destructive vigor and does not stop expelling lava. So much so that at 15. 18 of this Thursday the magma that arises from the interior of the earth has exceeded the capacity of the main cone and has overflowed it, according to the images released on Twitter by the Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands. “It is a common occurrence due to the fluctuations of the lava flow in the main cone. Nothing worrisome for now “, Involcan sources have reassured. “The normal thing”, complete sources from the National Geographic Institute (IGN), “is that these end up reinserting themselves in the main wash.”

The volcanic activity has been primed in the last hours with the residents of La Laguna, the neighborhood of the municipality of Los Llanos de Aridane that has been evacuated in three successive operations since the morning of 12 from October until this Thursday.

The main eviction occurred last day 12. That Tuesday, the authorities forced some 800 people from the center of La Laguna to leave due to the proximity of the lava. A day later, on Wednesday night, the emptying of another neighborhood located further east was decreed, a measure that affected some 100 people registered, according to the latest data. And just 12 hours later, on Thursday morning, the emptying of more surface area was decreed, this time to the west, right up to the border with the neighboring municipality of Tazacorte, where some 300 people.

However, as the spokesperson for the Steering Committee of the Volcanic Emergency Plan of Canarias (Pevolca), Miguel Ángel Morcuende, many of these neighbors had already left their homes in previous days. In total, in just two days about 1. , which brings the total number of displaced persons closer to 7. 000. Of these, only 283 have claimed the accommodation that the Government of the Canary Islands has arranged in a hotel in Fuencaliente (south of the island).

The lava, in this way, continues with its capricious and destructive path, after destroying 674, 5 hectares of land, 34, 2 more than the previous day. “This is what happens with all the laundry”, Morcuende himself declared at a press conference, “that they always surprise us with their behavior.”

Their transfer, in fact, is a true reflection of a behavior guided both by the orography and by the modifications in the volcanic cone, which create unexpected emission centers where before there was only a mountain of picón (lapilli). There is a wash, which the Pevolca qualifies as primal . She is currently in detention. This tongue ran into Todoque Mountain during the first week after the eruption and turned south. This advance ended up reaching the sea and forming the lava delta, which now measures about 34 hectares and whose growth has stopped. As the days passed, however, another arm was created just two hundred meters further south. The magma that formed it also fell down the slope, destroying banana plantations, and has stopped some 100 meters from the sea. This arm would also end up surrounding the Todoque Mountain to the north, engulfing what it finds in its path.

Over this primal stream runs another that also moves in a west-northwest direction. This language, in turn, has been divided into two appendices: a first one that until Wednesday had “high intensity and a lot of travel” and that throughout last night has destroyed the warehouse in which a supermarket of the Spar chain.

To the northwest of this tongue is the other casting arm. This was the one that crossed the Callejón de la Gata polygon, continued on its way down the hill yesterday afternoon and this morning it has crossed the neighborhood soccer field. “This language is the cause”, explained Morcuende, “that we have had to evacuate all of La Laguna en bloc.”

The supermarket and the soccer field are the last chapters of a already long list, which includes hundreds of small anonymous misfortunes: 1. 634 affected buildings, of which 1. 548 have been totally destroyed. To these figures we must add others 179, 3 hectares of crops swallowed. Of these, more than half (92, 9) they are from banana trees. The good news is that, according to Pevolca, these last two fronts “are losing their ability to move over the territory” due to the increasing viscosity and the large amount of materials that they are dragging.

During the Last night, the island registered more than fifty earthquakes, one of them of magnitude 4.5. This figure makes it the highest since the eruption began. The earthquake, as reported by the National Geographic Institute, has had a depth of 37 kilometers and occurred around 1. 30 am. Seismicity, however, continues to occur at high depths (greater than 20 kilometers) and, in principle, there is no greater risk.

The terrain, unlike previous days, has slightly deformed in the town of Las Manchas , already evacuated, just over a kilometer in a straight line from the volcanic cone. The spokesperson for the Scientific Committee, María José Blanco, has clarified, in any case, that this deformation may threaten the work of security forces and scientists working in the area, although it does not present major dangers for citizens.

Air quality has been good in recent days thanks to the winds that allow dissipation and the absence of thermal inversion. Starting tomorrow, however, conditions are expected to change due to both higher atmospheric pressure and the influx of air from the east. This event, of course, will benefit the operation of the island’s airport.

Revitalization campaign

The Canary Islands Government announced this Thursday that it is working on a “shock plan” to reactivate consumption and commerce on the island of La Palma. This program has, in the short term, a budget of 165. 000 Euros that will be invested in a campaign to encourage and boost consumption under the #ConsumeLaPalma brand. Both the spokesman Miguel Ángel Morcuende and the president of the Cabildo Palmero, Mariano Hernández Zapata, have insisted in their appearances that the island is a “safe destination” for visitors and that its agricultural and fishing products are perfectly suitable for commercial consumption.

On Monday, classes will resume in Los Llanos de Aridane, El Paso and Tazacorte

The Ministry of Education, Universities, Culture and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands has announced that next Monday 18 classes will resume in October the palm municipalities of Los Llanos de Aridane, El Paso and Tazacorte. Thus, a total of 4. 606 male and female students and 583 teachers from a score of centers will return to the classroom next week.

The counselor, Manuela Armas, explained that in the event of possible circumstances arising from the volcanic activity that could interrupt the teaching activity, “the educational centers will activate the necessary mechanisms to guarantee non-face-to-face teaching, it is that is, online ”.
